Mozambique

Africa's Indian Ocean Jewel

Mozambique is Africa’s Indian Ocean jewel — a coastline stretching over 2,500 kilometres, fringed by coral reefs, deserted beaches and warm turquoise waters that rank among the finest in the world. Largely bypassed by mainstream tourism, Mozambique has developed a collection of intimate, design-led beach lodges and island retreats that attract visitors seeking something genuinely remote and beautiful. It combines effortlessly with the game reserves of South Africa, Zimbabwe or Zambia for the perfect bush-and-beach pairing.

When to Travel

DRY SEASON
April to November is the best time to visit — warm, sunny and with calm seas. Humpback whales move along the coast from June to November. This is also the prime season for diving and snorkelling in the archipelagos.

GREEN / WET SEASON
December to March can bring heavy downpours but the landscape is lush and rates are lower. Whale sharks visit the Bazaruto Archipelago between October and March. Early season diving in the south can be exceptional.

What to See

Discover the landscapes that make Mozambique extraordinary

The Bazaruto Archipelago

A chain of six islands off the southern coast, the Bazaruto Archipelago is a national marine park of extraordinary beauty. Pristine coral reefs support some of the most diverse marine life in the Indian Ocean, including the world’s last viable population of dugong. Snorkelling and diving are world-class, the beaches are virtually empty, and the lodges on Bazaruto and Benguerra islands are among the finest in Africa.

The Quirimbas Archipelago

The Quirimbas in the far north is one of the last great undiscovered corners of the Indian Ocean — forty islands of mangrove, coral sand and ancient Swahili settlements. The marine life is spectacular, the diving exceptional and the sense of complete isolation profound. Medjumbe and Vamizi are among the most remote and beautiful private island lodges in the world.

Gorongosa National Park

One of Africa’s great conservation stories, Gorongosa was rebuilt from near-collapse into a thriving ecosystem through one of the most ambitious rewilding programmes on the continent. Today the park is home to exceptional concentrations of hippo, crocodile, elephant and lion, with the surrounding Mount Gorongosa adding forest walks and extraordinary birdlife.

Tofo & the Inhambane Coast

The Inhambane coast is the destination of choice for diving and marine encounters. Tofo is famous for its resident population of whale sharks — the largest fish in the ocean — which can be snorkelled with year-round, along with manta rays, humpback whales and an extraordinary diversity of reef fish. The beaches here are among the most beautiful in southern Africa.
