Best Time for a South African Safari

South African safari landscape at golden hour Safari Tips

South Africa's safari season splits broadly into two: the dry winter months and the lush green season. Neither is a wrong choice — they simply offer different trips.

Dry season: May to September

Vegetation thins out and animals gather around waterholes, making sightings easier and more predictable. This is peak safari season for a reason: cooler, dry days and excellent visibility for photography. It's also the busiest and most expensive time to travel.

Green season: October to April

Afternoon thunderstorms bring the bush to life. Newborn animals, migratory birds, and dramatic skies make this a quieter, more atmospheric time to visit — and often better value. Malaria risk is slightly higher in some regions, so check with your doctor before booking.

Our take

If this is a first safari and guaranteed sightings matter most, go dry season. If you've been before, or want a more personal, less crowded experience, the green season rewards patience with scenery few visitors see.
